Founded in 2007 to publish translations of Bosnian and Croatian literary works, Éditions M.E.O. quickly saw its activities extend beyond that. With a catalogue of nearly 250 titles, it includes works by writers from various regions of the French-speaking world, as well as translations of works from several linguistic fields. They focus on general literature, but have also developed joint collections with the Archives et Musée de la Littérature (heritage writers from Central Africa) and the Musée de la Médecine de l'ULB (works linked to the museum's exhibitions). In 2014, the idea of creating a publishing house blossomed in Sandra Di Silvio’s head. She already had a foothold in the literary world and had met many Belgian authors that weren’t enough put forward by the country’s editors. Maelström was founded in 1990 as an open group of artists, poets and writers of all genres, across Rome, Brussels and Paris. In 2003, Maelström became a publishing house and participated in the creation of the network RéÉvolution Poétique in 2002.
