Liberal democracy is facing a global wave of illiberalism. Authoritarian political leaders are undermining the rule of law, democratic checks and balances, and the rights of minorities. Neoliberal globalisation, which was supposed to spread liberal democracy across the world, has instead served to weaken it and strengthen autocratic regimes. Today, liberal democracies are home to only one in ten people worldwide, and the decline of democracy continues to worsen. A reactionary and illiberal culture war is being orchestrated by nationalist and conservative leaders, who use the media and social media as tools of disinformation to further their identity-based agenda. In the face of those seeking to undermine liberal democracy, it is urgent that we prevent the erosion of what remains the political system best placed to protect our rights and freedoms.
