In 1958, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, widow of King Albert I, received an invitation to visit Moscow. In the midst of the Cold War, she decided to accept. Panic broke out in the palace and within the government. Even the young King Baudouin, her grandson, was called upon to dissuade her from leaving for the other side of the Iron Curtain. A farce, certainly, but one that pays tribute to this monarch, widowed too young, a friend of scientists and artists, who loved to shake up protocol and the rules of the game imposed by a somewhat ossified tradition.
