Two students at the Sorbonne quickly become inseparable and spend their time haunting cinemas and jazz clubs, reading and playing pinball, telling each other everything about everything - love affairs included. Marco, a whimsical and ebullient Erasmus student from Bologna, quickly becomes disenchanted with the monotony of the lectures, but adores Paris. His accomplice, the narrator, works part-time in an old bookseller's shop; immersed in his books, the latter hates to be disturbed but loves to talk to the young man about the omnipotence of literature. The adventures of the two friends bear witness to an insatiable lust for life, magnified by the narrator's lightning encounter with Claire.
